Mesa Falls from 38th Largest City to 39th Largest City

Mesa use to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Mesa to be the 38th largest city in the nation - down from the 39th.

The census shows that Mesa is still growing in numbers (maybe babies being born?), but figures from the city utilities show a 12 percent drop in trash collections between July 2007 and July 2010.  Apartment rentals have declined, and students in Mesa Public Schools have declined (maybe from Mexican families leaving due to SB 1070?).

Population is important for federal and state funding from roads to schools.
