I was in my backyard yesterday and heard the familiar sound of summer in Mesa, Arizona. (The sound brought back a few childhood summer memories.) Cicadas are what cause all that loud buzzing during the month of July. The noise that you hear from the trees is from Male Cicadas trying to catch the attention of female Cicadas. Often times several males will congregate in one tree to maximize their volume.
